Richard and Dad spent four days at R-Bar-C Cub Scout Ranch - a.k.a. Cub Adventure Camp - near Christopher Creek, Arizona. This was a true adventure - Richard's first scout camp and the longest time he's ever spent away from Mom. We had a great time and came home exhausted. The picture below was taken on the last day of camp and shows all the Cub Scouts along with some of the camp staff. All of the parents and other adults were wisked off to the other side of the campfire pit.
Does this page seem BUSY to you? If so, GOOD, because maybe that means it almost conveys how much activity was jam-packed into the four days. Did I mention we came home exhausted?
No one warned us how much walking would be involved! Up and down and up and down over and over. Our campsite (Den 5 "Javelina") was at the bottom of the valley. Can you guess where the only flush toilets were?
Our campsite was close to the creek and had lots of wonderful shade trees.
Our boys "got down to business" right away. They performed Honor Guard duties to retrieve the colors at the first flag ceremony of the camp session. In the far right picture Richard is standing at the center flag pole. He helped retrieve the American flag, under the guidance of some great Boy Scout staff.
The main camp program consisted of rotations through nine activity stations over two days. All of the activities were both fun and educational. And Moms & Dads got to participate right along with the boys (the Parents vs. Kids Dodge Ball matches were a hoot!).
In case you're wondering, that's not Grizzly Adams leading Richard around the corral on a horse named Cheyenne, it's Erik with a beard.
For a first-timer, Richard had every reason to be proud that he got at least a few of his shots to hit the Archery and BB Gun targets.
We took home some neat souvenirs including a couple of leatherwork projects and cool walking staffs.
Some of the boys caught twelve inch Rainbow Trout in the creek.
Over the four days more than 90 pounds of crawdads were taken from the creek (Erik & Richard caught a grand total of ONE crawdad).
After all the walking and hill climbing, it felt especially nice to cool off our feet in the creek during afternoon free time.
In case I've left the incorrect impression that Camp was nothing but fun and games, I leave you with a couple of pictures as evidence of good old fashioned "character building" chores. Each den had to take a turn at cleaning the Dining Hall.
