Kicking back in the Grand Canyon Trailer Village

We camped in Grand Canyon National Park for Easter weekend 2008. The park was full of visitors and the Trailer Village was full every night. On Saturday it was "Archaeology Day" with special activities in the plaza in front of the Canyon View Information Center. [Take note for future visits - March is Archaeology Month.] Priscilla & Richard got to practice archaeology by sifting through a bucket of dirt to find artifacts like pieces of clay pots, pretty stones, seeds, corn cobs, and carbonized pieces of wood. Richard also got to make a little clay pot.

We really enjoyed staying two nights in the park. It allowed us to do & see more than we usually have time for on a one day visit. We rode the shuttle buses to lots of scenic overlooks. We hiked along the rim, and even walked a short way down two of the trails below the rim. We also enjoyed ranger talks & special programs like a "Fossil Walk" and a demonstration of Native American flutes.

Not much shade, but there are flush toilets and cable TV!

The highlight of the whole weekend was the Easter Sunrise Service held at Mather Point. We estimated the crowd at 200+ and it was so crowded we couldn't even see the people leading the service. But they were well prepared with a good p.a. system and we heard everything just fine. The service included a mix of traditional hymns and contemporary worship choruses, Bible readings, special music, and a wonderful sermon. The service was scheduled to begin at 6:20 am and it was COLD! To get the two shots below I had to hold the camcorder high over my head in the freezing wind. I think I have a new appreciation for how quickly one can get frostbite! David Wolfsrobe demonstrating Native American flutes
